Another student of the Polo National High School (PNHS) brought honor to the city.
Jasmin F. Pagaduan, who represented Alaminos City Division in the regional level, stunned her rivals and emerged as this year’s regional ASEAN Quiz champion.
The said contest which was participated by 14 division finalists from region 1 was held at the Division Conference Center in San Fernando City last July 24, 2009.
Pagaduan will try to sustain her winning run as she vies for the coveted prize in the national finals of the ASEAN Quiz 2009 which will be held in Quezon City from Sept. 10-13, 2009 and will be aired live over the National Broadcasting Center (NBN) Channel 4.
She will be joined once again by her coach, Mr. Rey Pascua, Mrs. Elsie Roy-school principal and Dr. Mercuria Rendon, education supervisor in Araling Panlipunan.
If she survived the national finals and finished not lower than second place over-all, she automatically gains one of the RP slots to represent the country in the 4th Regional ASEAN Quiz, according to Dr. Rendon.
The quiz show will be held in the country for the first time this coming November.
Pagaduan recently made a call on Mayor Hernani A. Braganza at his office to thank the latter for his full support to their campaign.
She was accompanied Dr. Oscar C. Tadeo, city schools division superintendent, her coach and Dr. Rendon.
Braganza congratulated Pagaduan for reaping another award for the city even as he wished her good luck for her upcoming participation in the national finals.
“My congratulations as well to your coach, principal and supervisor and Dr. Tadeo for working so hard this year as manifested by the major awards that our students continue to reap,” added the mayor.
Pagaduan narrated that she never expected to win citing that her co-competitors also came prepared and are very eager to bring home the top prize.
“I felt I was just lucky on that day but sometimes it really boils down to who deserves it more and has the will to win,” pointed out the senior lass who has still a month to prepare for her toughest competition yet.
Pascua said that this is the second time a student of PNHS reigned supreme in the regional competitions.
In 2005, Rizalyn Relano ruled the regional Pop-Ed Quiz. Last March, their school also finished second over-all in the 2009 Inter-School Learning Activity (ISLA) Challenge, an annual quiz show organized by the city government.
A battle of intellect, ASEAN Quiz is part of the activities of ASEAN-Committee on Culture and Information (ASEAN-COCI).
Its primary goal is to raise ASEAN awareness among the young generation of ASEAN citizens and promote regional knowledge among students.
The competition is open to students age 16 to 19 and takes place in a different ASEAN host country every two years.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Information first organized the ASEAN Quiz on September 17-29, 2006 in its capital city of Kuala Lumpur. (CIO)
