September 8, 2009
Four hundred twenty Alaminian athletes will take part in the 12th Milo Little Olympics which blasts-off this Friday at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in the capital town of Lingayen and CSI City Mall in Dagupan City.
The city’s athletes will again compete in the medal rich events like athletics, taekwondo, badminton and lawn tennis both in the elementary and secondary levels.
Also seeing action in this three-day sports spectacle are the teams of table tennis, sepak takraw, volleyball, and chess.
“Our athletes are ready and determined to duplicate if not surpass their previous remarkable feats,” according to Jose Elvis Sison, city sports coordinator.
Last year, through the all-out support of Mayor Hernani A. Braganza, the Alaminos City Division bagged home a total of 16 gold, 12 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
This was highlighted by Telbang Elementary School’s (TES) amazing run as it placed a strong second place over-all in the athletics elementary division.
TES, led by quadruple gold medalists Chrishelle Malanum, collected a total of 10 gold, 6 silvers and 3 bronze medals for its best-ever performance in this annual Luzon-wide sporting event.
Sison said the city’s delegation is more motivated to win this time because a much bigger prize awaits this year’s winners.
He said all champions in their respective events will represent this regional qualifying-leg in the first ever National Milo Little Olympics which will be held in Cebu City from October 23-25.
“Knowing that a gold medal will be their ticket to national championship, we expect our athletes to give their best in every game all the way to the finals,” he added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Oscar C. Tadeo, OIC schools division superintendent, thanked anew the Braganza administration for its tremendous and continued support and assistance being extended to the Alaminos City Division for the last five years.
He also described the city government’s its long-term and comprehensive sports program as one of the best initiatives to produce the best and brightest athletes that will soon represent the city in the national and international sports competitions.
Dr. Arturo Viray, education supervisor for MAPEH and head of the city’s delegation, said he likes the chances of the Alaminos Team this year.
This, despite being fitted anew against the best teams and schools in regions 1, II, III and CAR plus the fact that other schools continue to improve every year.
“Certainly, we could now compete, noted the head of the city’s delegation. We are now at par and could even score an upset win over powerhouse teams in Luzon.”
Viray cited that the Milo Little Olympics has been very helpful to local schools and the city division in general in gauging there teams’ preparation for other upcoming sports competitions.
One of these sporting events is the Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet which slated early next year in Ilocos Norte. (CIO)
