Green Team is LGU-Olympics 2009 champions
Date:
December 17, 2009
Champions at last.
Vice Mayor Teofilo G. Humilde Jr. and his green army will be hoisting for the first time the Alaminos City LGU-Olympics championship trophy.
After several years of runner-up finishes, the Legislative Department known as the “Green Team” finally showed its true might this year as it ruled almost all indoor and outdoor games.
The Green Team dethroned two-time depending champion White Team (Mayor’s Office) as it retained the men’s basketball and volleyball crowns.
Humilde’s wards also won in billiards (men), badminton (women), word factory (men), chess (women) and games of the general (men).
The vice mayor himself competed and topped his favorite event, the scrabble, as he won all his matches with relative ease.
As early as June, it was obvious that Green Team is on a mission.
“Nothing but a championship (for our team),” said city councilor Joselito O. Fontelera.
And the members of the team made good their promise with their stunning victories.
“What a way to end the year,” added city councilor Ma. Angela A. Braganza. It came at the right time and it’s a fitting gift to our dynamic vice mayor.
The title means much a lot to Humilde, who conceived together with Mayor Hernani A. Braganza the staging of yearly sportsfest for the city government employees, now on his final term as vice mayor.
Winning the championship seems to be bitter-sweet experience though for the charismatic vice mayor who is eyeing one of seat in the provincial board in next year’s election.
He felt very happy and proud for their win. Sad because he knows that he will no longer be around next year to steer his team to its second consecutive title.
City councilor Earl James C. Aquino, who helped his team reach the championship in basketball, said their team remains upbeat that it can pull another major upset next year.
“The White Team will definitely bounce back next year and will try to regain its old throne,” noted city councilor Carolyn Dizon-Sison.
“We also expect other teams beefing up," she added. "We will be ready.”
Aside from Green Team, other teams also successfully retained some of the titles like the volleyball women and word factory by Pink Team (basic services) and table tennis women and badminton men by White Team.
But the biggest revelation is Maroon Team (Engineering) which almost swept the 5K and 3K fun run in both men and women’s category.
The LGU Olympics awarding rites will be one of the highlights of Alaminos LGU Family Christmas Party on the 18th of this month at the Don Leopoldo Sison Auditorium here.
No less than Mayor Braganza and former mayor Eduardo Fontelera, the affair’s special guest, will hand over the cash prizes, medals and trophies to the winning athletes of this year’s edition of sportsfest. (CIO)
