Alaminos City Going Wireless this summer…
Date: March 23, 2010

In pursuit of the commitment to provide basic literacy and continuing education to the Out-of-School Youth and Adults who belong to the marginalized sector of the city, Mayor Hernani A. Braganza prompted to launch massive computer literacy programs for Alaminians to commence this summer 2010.

This landmark initiative of the Braganza Administration in partnership with the DepEd is another milestone to sustain its goal of providing learning opportunities that will empower the out-of-school youth and adult learners to continue learning in order to become a contributing member of the society.

The city government has long been an enduring partner of various stakeholders in its effective and efficient program implementation for basic level alternative (non-formal education) which encourages and promotes various activities to draw literacy advocate, reward literacy initiatives and sustain for literacy efforts.

Mayor Braganza, a known literacy advocate once said that as far education is concerned “no one must be left behind.”

He envisioned every Alaminian youth specifically the OSYs who failed to attend formal schooling to have equal opportunities just like the regular school attendees.

“Our OSYs must continue their studies to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge which will be their passport in landing on decent jobs.” The vibrant mayor continued.

With the city government extending its full share in catering to the needs of the city’s OSYs, various computer literacy programs are on deck for free this summer.

These computer literacy programs were conceptualized to establish the development of a society where people continue to learn on their own so that they can improve their quality of life and eventually participate in national development efforts.

As a start, the city will be giving 10-HR Basic PC Operations which aims target beneficiaries to learn basic computer skills and hands-on experience with computers. Upon completion of the program, the learners can now apply the acquired theories to generate their own livelihood.

On the other hand, the SCALA Curriculum is a learning system which is made up of many self-faced modules which primarily teaches the OSYs with the necessary computer skills on various programs in the Microsoft for future employment opportunities specifically on data encoding (word processing, account, web page building etc.) With the completion of the 240HR program instruction, the learners undergo another 300HR On-the-Job Training (OJT) to quality for TESDA Equivalency.

To complete these flagship computer literacy programs of the city government is the launching of ESkwela project. The program provides an intervention in education that aims to make education accessible to Out-of-School Youth. It is a learning system designed to provide a viable alternative to the existing formal education structure.

This remarkable breakthrough in the power of information technology will draw inspiration to the out-of-school youths and adults of the city to go back to school to learn and get connected to the world and discover new information via the internet.

As it was envisioned, Alaminos City will continually gain respect and recognition nationwide because of its unprecedented efforts in opening the gateways of wireless interconnectivity which provides its people options to improve their quality of living.

With these massive computer literacy programs of the city government, and with Mayor Hernani Braganza at helm, Alaminians can now savor a better quality of life which marks the end call of poverty and the rise of a more promising tomorrow.
