April 19, 2010
The City Veterinarian Office (CVO) is conducting a month-long vaccination drive aimed at averting the possible spread of rabies in the city this summer.
"Dubbed as “Veterinary Mission 2010", the said the anti-rabies campaign, will cover all of the city’s 39 barangays," said Dr. Ronaldo Abarra, the city veterinarian.
The vaccination drive commenced last April 7 at barangay Pangapisan and will end on May 7 in barangay Pandan.
Abarra said a team of veterinarians and staff will be working under the so called “Mobile Veterinary Clinic” (MVC) to carry out the vaccination program in the communities and at the same time cater to the needs of pet owners and livestock raisers.
He added that anti-rabies vaccines are given to all dogs for free and besides, residents are educated to become responsible pet owners.
Aside from the vaccination, the CVO is also distributing deworming medicines for livestock animals as well as dogs and cats and conduct free veterinary consultation.
The city veterinary office has already vaccinated more than 30, 000 dogs for the last 7years and is targeting to immunize around 10,000 dogs this summer.
“Pet owners in our city have been very responsive in the past knowing the importance of this vaccination to their lives and the people around them,” said the city veterinarian.
“We are again expecting our citymates to be turning up at the barangay halls with their pets," he added.
Abarra pointed out that the city don’t have high incidence of rabies cases last year.
“But just the same, we are doing this rabies vaccination program annually as a preventive measure,” he continued.
The city veterinarian noted that his office remain committed to the realization of the Braganza administration’s vision of a rabies free Alaminos in the next 3-5 years.
For those who might or already missed the scheduled visit of the MVC in their respective villages, pet owners could simply bring their dogs to the city veterinary office for the needed shots
Unlike in other towns and cities in the province, there were only few incidence of residents got bitten by dogs but no reports of fatality. (CIO)
