City awarded P 4M worth of scholarship
Date:
June 7, 2010
A total of P 4M scholarship assistance has been granted by the City Government of Alaminos this year to the city’s poor but deserving students under the City’s Expanded Scholarship Program (CESP).
Forty five scholarship grants were awarded yesterday at city hall ground to first time city scholars who were accompanied by their proud parents.
Present during the awarding ceremony were City Administrator Wilmer Panabang, Education Supervisor for Science Cecilia Nisperos, representing Dr. Oscar Tadeo, DepEd Alaminos OIC chief, Dr. Gloria Reinoso, Principal II of the Alaminos City National High School and other school principals and department heads and city hall employees.
City Mayor Hernani A. Braganza personally congratulated the city’s scholars during a briefing at the conference hall. He exhorted the students to study extra hard, shun vices and moral decadences, avoid getting into early relationship, and focus on maintaining their high mark to keep their scholarship and achieve their dreams in life.
The visionary mayor, who retained his post and on his way of completing his three consecutive terms, even reminded the scholars that the funds used for them to go to college didn’t come from his wallet.
“It’s the money of our tax payers," he stressed. "I know you will study really hard because you won’t let your parents, citymates and the city government down.”
“The (scholarship) will be your passport to success… always believe that you can make it… do your best to finish your studies and make us all proud,” he added.
To date, the city has 210 scholars since the Braganza Administration launched the Alaminos City Expanded Scholarship Program in 2005, one of the major components of the city’s Bright Child Program that covers all aspects of the youths’ holistic development.
The city government has so far invested more than P 12M in scholarship assistance alone, according to city budget officer Rowena Ruiz.
And the city is determined to set aside additional funds for the CESP for the city’s future scholars in the next three years.
Local leaders and Parent-Teachers Associations here have described in the past this CESP as one of the city government’s valuable gifts to the city’s youth for them to reach their dreams in life.
This laudable initiative has also been said to prepare the city’s youth to become globally competitive, be of great help to their family and further contribute to the city and nation’s sustained economic development.
Nisperos, who spoke in behalf of Dr. Tadeo, said young Alaminians especially the scholars are so blessed for having a very dynamic and education development oriented leader who have an over flowing concern in the utmost welfare of the city’s youth.
“In behalf of our assistant division chief, we wish to thank our very good mayor, Hernani A. Braganza for his concern, kindness and unwavering support by providing scholarship grants to our high school graduates,” she noted.
“This program of the city government is very significant in build a better future to our young people.”
Under the said program, the scholars could enroll in any college or university in any part of the country and take up any course they want.
Full scholars are entitled to receive a P 78, 600 stipends for the whole school year, and half-scholar are given P 39, 300 per school year. The scholarship covers the school tuition fees including book, food, travelling, boarding house and clothing allowance.
The would-be scholars underwent the usual screening and rigid examination conducted by the city planning and development office last summer to determine the type of scholarship they could avail of.
Mary Jane Ancheta, mother of one of the full scholars, profusely extended her heartfelt gratitude to Mayor Braganza and the city government as tears started to run her cheeks.
She said that like other parents who were present, she felt very proud and happy that her son got a scholarship grant which is definitely a huge help to their family.
“We hope and pray that this scholarship program of our beloved mayor will continue because it’s really a big help, especially to us who have less in life, added Ancheta in Filipino.”
True to his word in 2004 and up to now, Mayor Braganza will continue to invest on the future of the city’s youth until his three consecutive term ends in 2013.(CIO)
