June 11, 2006
The University of Philippines Sandigan showed the way and the members of city’s Sangguniang Kabataan Federation (SKF) was more than happy and grateful to receive the wonderful gift.
Headed by its president, Councilor Margie Lou Orange Humilde, the city’s youth leaders underwent a whole-day Leadership Workshop at Bolo Beach here last Sunday.
This timely and important undertaking for the SKF was made possible through the intercession of Mayor Hernani A. Braganza.
Recognizing the need for more exposures and leadership training-workshop for the city’s youth leaders, the Mayor sought the assistance of UP Sandigan through its President Janeth Calantoc.
UP Sandigan, a student organization advocating youth empowerment, designed a training module centering on team building activities, group discussions, value formation workshops and project proposal making.
The seminar dubbed as “Youth Unleashed” has a theme “Uniting Today’s Youth towards the Nation’s Progress”.
Councilor Orange Humilde, daughter of Vice Mayor Teofilo G. Humilde Jr., tackled the role of SK in nation building even as she thanked the Mayor for his concern and wonderful gift for the city’ youth especially in preparing them for their future roles in the society.
She said the workshop facilitated by UP Sandigan was unique and very special compared to the previous seminars and workshop the federation has gone through as each of participants learned a lot from the seminar and greatly enjoined the company of the Sandiganistas.
Braganza, who was once the president of DeLa Salle University Student Council and national chairman of the National Union of Students of the Philippines, shared his good experiences of working with fellow student activists and leaders from UP.
The Mayor acknowledged UP as the bastion of student activism and empowerment that played a critical role during the dark days of democracy the country.
And being with this youth group, talking to other people and sharing one’s views and asking their help and believing that he can do something, taught him the complex art of leadership.
He even revealed that UP Los Baños is also one of the partners of the city in its agriculture development thrust on which the institution was tapped to share their expertise particularly on hybrid rice and corn production and farm mechanization.
“Leadership comes with responsibilities, your ability to identify your resources and problems and more importantly your ability and capability to provide and execute the solutions to the benefit of the majority of our people,” the Mayor said.
He said sometimes there’s a need to break traditions and cultures and the hardest part is to make decisions that would be able to develop your city and help your people.
“You (SK) are one lucky bunch because you’re given the opportunity and you were selected by your peers to lead them towards a certain goal, an objective, a vision which is the mental state of the future.” In few years time some this youth leaders will inherit the city either as ordinary citizens or as leaders of our city.
And when they reach that point, the Mayor has one good advice-don’t forget this day because whatever you’ve learned here I’m sure you will apply it in your future endeavors. (CIO)
